Hydrogen can have various detrimental impacts on the toughness of steel, such as hydrogen embrittlement. Total and diffusible hydrogen testing was required to confirm that hydrogen removal processes are effective. Due to the lack of a detailed hydrogen testing specification, various methods of sample preparation, storage and cleaning were investigated to determine a best practice for total and diffusible hydrogen testing using the Bruker G8 gas chromatographer. It was concluded that sample preparation and handling for total hydrogen content testing is critical to ensure consistent (± 0.20 ppm) , reproducible and accurate results.
