Tracks: Sensors

Engineers from within steel production continue to increase their use of linear position and displacement sensors for providing real-time information to live monitoring systems, such as remote or centralized programmable logic controllers and data collection systems, which are taking over more control of linear position/actuator-based systems. Many different types of sensors can measure displacement, position and proximity, so application specifications (e.g., extreme environments, high temperature targets) and user bias (e.g., wireless vs. hardwired, analog preference) play roles in determining the right sensor for the job. This presentation examines the advantages of non-contact lasers and MEMS-based inclinometers and encoders over conventional sensors.
