Prediction of Mechanical Properties of Microalloyed Medium-Carbon Wire Rods and Bars (Room 308)

A new approach was presented concerning a method for calculating mechanical properties for microalloyed, medium-carbon wire rods and bars. The proposed equations considered chemical composition, ferritic grain size and carbonitride precipitation. A model for microstructure evolution was used to estimate austenite grain size and the amount of microalloying elements in solution before the austenite transformation to ferrite. A 0.3%C-0.02%Nb-0.11%V steel was used for industrial validation. Results for tensile properties from rolled samples could be predicted with reasonable accuracy, allowing the use of the method in a current industry line.
