Operation of Coal-Based Sponge Iron Rotary Kiln to Reduce Accretion Formation and Optimize Quality and Power Generation (Room 402)

The optimal decision control system (ODCS), developed for the first time at TATA Sponge Iron Ltd. – Joda, uses gas and liquid petroleum to minimize cost, maintain quality within a narrow desired range (82-86% Fe), reduce accretion formation(leading to increase in campaign lives from 100 days to more than 220 days), as well as increase the steam generation rate from waste heat in flue gases. ODCS determines dynamically the changes to be made in input variables, including air flowrate through primary and secondary air blowers for given coal and ore feedrates. A cost penalty is imposed for deviation from desired targets.
