Owing to the recent developments in advanced high-strength steels (AHSS), the characteristics of inclusions in these steels have gained much attention. The current work is aimed at investigating the influence of varied Al content (0.5-6%) on the characteristics of inclusions in medium-manganese steels (5% Mn). In laboratory-scale experiments, it was found that an increase in Al content from 1 to 3% resulted in ~100% increase in the total number of inclusions. The major increase was observed in Al2O3 and Al2O3-MnS inclusions. In 3% Al steel, there is an increase in nitride inclusions, which is consistent with thermodynamic predictions.
