Lime is the most common desulfurizing agent due to its low cost, good sulfide capacity, and convenience in storage and transportation. The desulfurization efficiency of lime-based agents can be enhanced by promoting stirring and improving slag fluidity. However, attainment of proper lime dissolution is a challenging task and operators face difficulties in preventing lime from getting lumped under prevalent operating conditions. Based on the principles of high-temperature thermochemistry, alternative fluxing reagents were designed that can promote the sulfide capacity as well as kinetically enhance the desulfurization process by lowering the melting point of slag.
