Control of emissions in electric arc furnace (EAF) shops is essential to abide by the environmental regulations. Secondary offgases emitted during furnace operations are sucked out of the working area through the canopy hood. However, efficient capture of these emissions is not simple due to sudden variations in their generation rate and likely interference of cross-flow airstreams with their trajectory. To visualize the gas flow pattern and to assess the capture efficiency, computational fluid dynamics simulations were carried out for a typical EAF shop layout by varying suction rate and furnace energy loss rate, which correspond to various stages of furnace operation.
