BOF Slag: Turning Waste Into Value (Room 401)

Although basic oxygen steelmaking slag is usually considered to be a waste, it holds great potential for value generation due to its chemical composition. However, the presence of phosphorus prevents the direct in-plant recycling of slag. Based on the principles of multi-component phase equilibria of slag systems and magnetic separation, a new process route has been suggested for: (a) selectively extracting phosphorus into a phos-rich phase, which can be used as a fertilizer source and (b) obtaining a phos-devoid phase, which can be recycled into ironmaking and steelmaking operations.
