Optimizing Coating Weight at U. S. Steel Midwest Plant No. 3 Continuous Galvanizing Line

In 2015, Hatch was engaged by a North American steel coil producer to provide a coating equipment and control system upgrade for an existing continuous galvanizing line. The upgrade focused on equipment considered critical to obtain a high level of coating control – an AchievaCC automation package with high-performance air knives with precision positioners, blowers and edge baffles. This approach reduced equipment costs and installation effort, along with minimizing downtime. Commissioned in early 2016, the integrated system delivered significant demonstrable metal savings in addition to numerous other benefits. This paper summarizes the project goals and solution and quantifies the benefits achieved.
