Understanding Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) Susceptibility of High-Strength Steels Based on Finite Element Analyses and Experimental Investigations (Room 412)

High-strength steels used in aerospace, fastener and automobile industries, etc., suffer from premature failures due to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). The failures could be catastrophic based on the choice of applications. Several material properties, such as yield strength, plasticity, toughness, etc., can influence the susceptibility of high-strength steels to HE failures. Therefore, in the present study, both experimental and computational approaches have been adopted to understand HE failures in relation to material susceptibility using a simplified ASTM F1624 standard test and in-situ tensile testing. Finite element analyses are carried out to develop a fundamental understanding of the problem related to various material parameters and properties.
