From the observations of a large number of heats in respect of energy input rate, energy consumption and electrode consumption for identical scrap quality and identical transformer secondary setpoints, it was concluded that the arc characteristics are strongly influenced by the slag chemistry and other features of the slag. Slag constituents vary in every heat and so does the net effect on energy input rate and energy consumption. The salient features are chemistry of the arc, temperature of the arc and presence of conductors or semi-conductors emulsified in the slag. This paper will describe how to improve arc characteristics.
