Tracks: Metallurgy - Processing, Products & Applications

A laser based additive manufacturing technique called Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) was used to repair and hardface several steel industry tools. One such tool was a hardfaced piercing tool which observed a 500% increase in service life. Mechanical testing and optical microscopy were used to study the properties of the high temperature and high wear alloys that were deposited using DMD. The results show that due to the high energy density of the laser beam, excellent metallurgical bonding and mechanical properties can be achieved. Cost analysis was conducted to compare the viability of DMD versus conventional techniques.
