Tracks: Continuous Casting

The investigation of complex steel flow inside the continuous caster (CC) mold by plant trials are cost-, time- and risk-intensive. Thus, a state-of-the-art full-scale experimental water model of the continuous caster mold has been commissioned at the University of Toronto. The CC model comprises of a full-scale mold, reduced-scale tundish reservoir, and is fitted with industrial stopper rod and submerged-entry nozzle (SEN). High-speed camera, high-definition videography, particle image velocimetry, and anemometers enable in-situ flow visualization and quantification. Rigorous parametric study and optimization of the casting variables and the SEN designs will be performed. The CC model is presented and some experimental case studies are discussed.
