A Novel Approach to Self-Start Open-Stream Casting (Room 408)

At Steel Melting Shop No. 1 (LD No. 1) at Tata Steel, the conventional approach of start-up of open-stream casting was to plug the nozzles with ceramic plug and pour nozzlex powder at the top. Once the ladle was opened, the process involved making use of launder to streamline the metal flow and discarding of initial billets as these are rich in C% due to ingress of nozzlex powder. A new method of starting casting by application of a starter tube in the cold tundish practice was explored. This has given tremendous results in terms of safety and productivity for the shop.
