Electric Power System Reliability for Steel Manufacturing (Room 316)

Tracks: Electrical Applications

The greatest risk to any form of steelmaking is the power supply. From the standpoint of the electric power system, four critical asset classes in that system are all under stress: transformers, cables, breakers, and relays and protective equipment. There are also the considerations of aging, general condition, lack of proper testing and/or maintenance, and the fact that most steelmaking production systems don't view these four asset classes as a system, but rather as a series of connected electrical equipment. We will present the basics of: • Attributes of each class. • Failure modes. • Method of detection. • Building a system-wide reliability plan.
