Tracks: Environmental/Electric Steelmaking

Many air pollution control (APC) systems are still equipped with AC motors, despite the increasing convenience granted by variable voltage, variable frequency (VVVF) drives in terms of OpEx. Several fume treatment plants, supplied by Danieli as many as 20 years ago, were equipped with fixed-speed, medium-voltage motors. In this paper, some experiences of operating plants will be shown and highlighted. Improvements will be proposed to achieve better energy consumption, thanks to modifications of part of the equipment and/or of the plant layout architecture with reasonable payback time. In addition, some new conceptual ideas to reach such results will be discussed.
