AOD furnaces have been widely used in steel mills, but many challenges remain to increase the heat exchange efficiency in the furnace hood. Due to characteristics of the exhausting gases from the melting at 1,800°C, steel mills have faced failures of the hood's stainless Inconel 625 overlay tubes, i.e., thermal fatigue cracks, wearing mechanisms by particles over a rough overlay surface, and stress corrosion due to susceptibility of the heat-affected zone during overlaying. Alternative technology in composite tubes may result in better performance due to a more stable thermal expansion, less rough surface finishing and a 100% verified bond, thereby assuring thermal transfer and corrosion resistance.
