Advanced Mill Roll Service Life Management (Room 309)

Multiple physical, finite element (FE), three-dimensional, parametric models of rolling mills were recently developed to better address work roll and backup roll quality for service. Hot and cold rolling technologies employed to roll the advanced high-strength materials currently being developed dictate this computational and experimental research and development of the mill rolls. The proposed FE modeling accounts for the interaction of residual stresses imparted from roll manufacturing and extreme mill loading conditions. Output from the developed mill modeling provides the roll manufacturer insight into current and future demands to address rolls’ integrity and service life cycle management.
