The identification, characterisation and management of non-metallic inclusions in steels is critical to the performance of finished products and is a topic of constant research and innovation. In order for this assessment to be made in a cost effective and timely manner, the analysis must be conducted with hardware that is capable of sensitivity – being able to accurately measure compositions from even the smallest inclusions – and speed. We will discuss how recent developments in analytical hardware and software for multi-functional scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) ensure that these sometimes contrary aims can be achieved in a user friendly environment suitable for both experienced analysts and occasional users.
