In the eastern Asian area, in order to comply with the stringent emission regulations, it is necessary to select and apply suitable DeNOx technology for the existing thermal power plants or newly built thermal power plants. DeNOx process, using Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is now widely applied to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from stationary sources. Titanium oxide (TiO2) based NOx removal catalyst has been broadly utilized for SCR system. Especially, plate type catalyst has been applied for coal fired thermal power plants which contain high concentration of fly ash in the boiler flue gas with no troubles including plugging and erosion. The fuel coal usually includes catalyst poisons like Alkali metals, Arsenic, Calcium, Silicates compound and thus catalyst activity is often decreased by the accumulation or masking by such catalyst poisons. New catalyst addition, replacement of spent catalyst or catalyst regeneration are considered as solutions to keep the performance of SCR system. In order to achieve the cost effective catalyst management plan mentioned above, it is necessary to properly design the catalyst based on the actual plant flue gas data obtained by slip stream or sample catalyst test. In this report, we will explain the issues on retrofitting of SCR system for existing thermal power plant such as space availability and impact for the downstream AQCS like Air-pre heater, DESP, Wet FGD. Furthermore, we will report the experience and issue of the reactivation of spent catalyst which is aimed for long-term economical operation.
