NASS 2019 Annual Meeting

Resident/Fellow Education Pathway: Transition to Practice II: Essential Skills for Starting Practice (Room Room W470a)

Moderator: Andrew J. Schoenfeld, MD

The transition from training to practice can be one of the most daunting and critical periods in the life of a physician. From finding a job, negotiating opportunities for success, clinical and practice-based challenges, pitfalls seem to present at every turn. This symposium is intended to ease some of the anxiety and provide insight into navigating the period spanning the end of clinical training and the start of independent practice. Ideal for residents, fellows and individuals within the first five years of clinical practice, the symposium also will present useful information for all interested parties and those also looking to transition to a new position in the near future.

Upon completion of this session, participants should gain strategies to:

  • Recognize best practices and actions to avoid in beginning a clinical practice;
  • Identify key processes in the administration of a clinical practice including clinical documentation, coding and working with hospitals and industry;
  • Describe pitfalls that can interfere with a successful transition from training to practice.
