The debate as to whether variability of the Earth’s climate and the seeming trend toward increased severity and frequency of extreme events is part of naturally occurring cycles or due to the effects of greenhouse gas releases is active, at times contentious, and will most certainly continue. This talk will present an overview of the so-called “greenhouse effect” due to the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere, causes of natural climate variability, and a discussion of whether the human-induced contributions due to emissions of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels can be separated from the naturally occurring cycles. The latter topic is one that is at the center of the current debate. A discussion of the suggested trend toward increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events resulting from an enhanced greenhouse effect will follow.
