A remarkable story came to light about a Navajo boy named Wolfkiller who, in the 1860s, was taught by his grandfather and mother to follow the “path of light.” He learned that evil thoughts have the power to destroy people and their society. “Keep your thoughts on the beautiful things you see around you,” the grandfather counseled. In the evenings, when their day’s work was done, Wolfkiller’s grandfather would sit with the children around the hogan fire and tell them animal stories that taught them to appreciate nature and get along with other people. Wolfkiller took these stories to heart and grew up to become a most upstanding and admirable man. For the benefit of the younger generations, the humble Navajo shepherd asked the speaker’s great-grandmother, Louisa Wade Wetherill, to record his story. The result is the book Wolfkiller: Wisdom from a Nineteenth Century Navajo Shepherd. Come and learn some of Wofkiller’s wisdom.
