Fiber optic position sensors have become an enabler of new equipment designs from medical to mining, from industrial robots to ferris wheels. In this session, we will present some case studies and lessons learned that will help guide engineers in their own fiber optic sensor deployments. Attendees will discover the pros and cons of fiber optic encoders and sensors versus conventional electronics-based sensors. They will also learn to always consider all aspects of system planning - including installation, maintenance, and field repair methodology, how to properly design an optical link, and how to select optical cabling and connectors appropriate to the application.
