Emerging Applications of Hyperspectral Image Sensing in Transportation (Room 203 AB)

10 Jun 15
2:40 PM - 3:20 PM

Tracks: Sensors @ Work

The transportation system is massive, open, and dynamic. Regular performance and condition assessments of the complex interacting networks of roadways, bridges, railroads, pipelines, waterways, airways, and intermodal ports are expensive. Hyperspectral imaging is an emerging remote sensing technique for the non-destructive evaluation of multimodal transportation infrastructure. In this session, some key takeaways include learning about transportation system challenges to sustain US economic vitality, the fundamentals of hyperspectral image sensing, acquisition, and classification, about new applications of hyperspectral image analysis in transportation systems.  This research will describe theoretical frameworks for the analysis of select transportation systems including pavements and railways, and about decision-support in transportation policy-making using hyperspectral image analysis. The practical implications in cost reduction from using the frameworks described will motivate standardization and policy-making for their long-term deployment.
