The China Government has targeted the semiconductor industry as a key component in its future economic growth. To achieve this goal, China entered the fray of the semiconductor M&A market with government financial backing, helping to spark several new buyout and investment possibilities in recent months. Many of the discussions have involved the manufacturing segment of the industry, and in particular, back-end packaging and test companies. Since the recent acquisition of STATSChipPAC by China-based JCET, various other SATS/OSAT companies, including ChipMos, Powertech Technology, and SPIL, have all received significant investment proposals from the Chinese financial community. Just why the packaging/test market may represent the best “bang for the buck” investment opportunity, how this will affect the supply chain, and the possible changes that could occur as a result will be the theme of the presentation.
