ACA -CCPA 2016 Conference & Expo

ID #158-A Retrospective on Marriage Equality: Montreal 2006 and 2016 (Room 512BF)

Today, same-sex marriage is a reality in the U.S. and Canada, but it has been a long struggle over many years. In 1973, Maryland became the first U.S. state to pass a statute banning marriage between same-sex couples. In 2006, with only Massachusetts allowing same-sex marriage in the U.S., ALGBTIC sponsored a same-sex wedding at the ACA Conference in Montreal. On the 10-year anniversary of that event, current and past leaders of ALGBTIC and wedding participants will discuss the importance of the event at the time, the impact of the wedding, and the social justice implications for counselors.
