The role and skills of the public information officer (PIO) are the focus of this interactive class. Interviewing techniques, writing press releases, media relations, relationship building, preplanning the news media, and response to all-hazard incidents are among the skills highlighted. The PIO is an important part of the Incident Command System and the Integrated Emergency Management System. Students are introduced to the Joint Information System and methods for building a PIO collaborative.
