Gary Davenport, Ph.D., companion animal technical manager with ADM Animal Nutrition, focuses on the nutritional and functional characteristics of select ancient grains and their use in pet food formulations. The marketing of grain-free pet food products has led to increased use of alternative ingredients in pet foods as replacements for traditional ingredients negatively perceived by consumers. Unfortunately, there is little published knowledge about these alternative ingredients and how they are best used. Research data will be presented on the unique differences in the nutritional and functional characteristics of selected ancient grains used in pet food formulations.
