In our roles as athletic academic support professionals, many of us interact a great deal with parents, guardians and family members from recruitment all the way to graduation both by design and by request. While a common goal is to move student-athletes towards a level of accountability and independence, many relational factors may promote or inhibit the progress towards that goal. Our presentation will take a look at those factors and review the research regarding these important relationships and influence during the college experience. The presentation will also be designed to facilitate small group discussions that will allow attendees to share their own experiences, strategies that have and haven’t worked with parents, guardians and family members, and scenario discussions. Finally, best practices will be shared and attendees will have a chance to reflect on their own personal philosophy and takeaways from the session.
