Effect of Different Types of Nozzles on Swirling Flow Development and Shell Growth Behavior in a Bloom Casting Mold (Room 407)

Flow pattern affects many important phenomena that have a major impact on the quality of continuous casting products. A coupled 3D model was developed to compare the effects of four nozzle types on the flow pattern of steel in mold and the shell growth. Predicted shell profile had a good agreement with the measured. For the quad-furcated curved nozzle, a swirling characteristic similar to M-EMS can be induced. This means that it is only necessary to improve the uniformity of the shell by adjusting the nozzle type, which will be helpful to the overall quality improvement of bloom castings.
