Revealing Localized Mold Thermal and Fluid Flow Phenomena in Continuous Casting (Room 407)

Very densely distributed optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) mold temperature sensors, with thousands of probing points per mold, uncover and visualize localized heat and fluid flow events with details and speed at a previously unseen level of resolution. In data from several newly installed sensor systems, a deeper insight into taper, fluid flow, local contact, heat transfer and solidification anomalies is found for slab casters. From high-speed, thin-slab casters to larger formats, this offers potential for increasing the understanding of the solidification processes and to counteract process problems like breakouts and cracks.
