This paper will present examples of refractory design and implementation that result in improved energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact due to the use of optimized, advanced engineered refractory materials. Applications from steel plant processes such as electric arc furnaces, induction melters, troughs, deltas and other high-wear and -corrosion areas will be discussed, along with refractory solutions to address issues experienced in these areas. Factors such as chemistry, microstructure and bond system will be considered.
