Iron units represent the largest operating expense in both direct reduction and steelmaking plants. Even a slight change in iron yield can have a greater impact on operating cost than a major swing in energy cost. Therefore, maximizing yield is essential at the metallic iron unit and liquid metal stages. This paper will discuss the factors influencing iron unit yield: ore selection, direct reduced iron (DRI) properties, material handling, and melting practice. These costs must be controlled to remain competitive in the iron and steel market for integrated DRI/EAF operations and merchant ore-based metallics producers alike.
