The kinetics of nitrogen reaction with third-generation advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) is of interest, as the affinities of alloy elements (Al, Mn and Si) to nitrogen differ from that of liquid iron. An isotope exchange technique was applied to measure the nitrogen reaction rate for pure liquid iron, iron-manganese alloy, and alloy with AHSS composition. It was found if too high a gas flux is applied, the noise in the measurements will cover any possible trends introduced by changing alloy concentrations. On the other hand, if the gas flux is too low, the measured rate is controlled predominately by gas phase mass transfer instead of the interfacial reaction.
