The effect of carbon bonding and carbon concentration on direct reduced iron (DRI) melting behavior is investigated. DRI carbon content and its forms such as cementite, graphite or amorphous carbon can have an impact on DRI melting temperature and melting behavior. The effect of C type and amount is evaluated with confocal microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and by using an infrared gas analyzer to monitor the gas generation from reactions between DRI pellets and a laboratory slag-steel melt. Understanding of DRI melting behavior will become the cornerstone of finding optimal DRI carbon contents and types.
