Optimization of the Ca amount in steel plays a crucial role in inclusion modification with calcium treatment. While inadequate Ca in steel causes solid calcium aluminate inclusions, higher Ca causes solid CaS formation. Both inclusions are detrimental to steel cleanliness, resulting in nozzle clogging and final product defects. The Ca amount should be adjusted depending on the total oxygen in the steel. Otherwise, Ca-rich calcium aluminate and CaS inclusions can form in lower total oxygen-containing steels. In this research, the effect of Ca additions and total oxygen amount on inclusion modification is investigated with thermodynamic calculations, laboratory investigations and plant trials.
