The feasibility of using biocarbon materials as a foaming agent to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with electric arc furnace steelmaking was explored. Slag foaming is an essential step in EAF steelmaking. The interaction between biocarbon and slag determines its suitability for slag foaming. Experiments using a tensiometer under H2/Ar atmosphere were performed to understand the interfacial interaction between molten slag and various types of biocarbon substrates. Mechanisms of the interfacial phenomena were developed. The foaming behavior of biocarbon materials was examined in a 25-kg-capacity steel melting furnace. The foaming behavior of biocarbon materials agreed with the tensiometer observation.
