Carbonaceous Materials Transformation in Pulverized Coal Injection (Room 405)

Using the injection simulation rig in CanmetENERGY, experimental works were conducted to examine the combustion behavior and carbonaceous material transformation of coal in an environment similar to an industrial blast furnace tuyere. The combustion residues collected were analyzed to quantify the contribution of different types of carbon, namely char, coke and soot, using a thermogravimetric analysis technique. The information collected allows for the determination of pulverized coal transformation into different types of carbonaceous materials during rapid heating and combustion. The collected information enables a direct comparison between coals and allows optimization of combustion conditions to further increase pulverized coal injection rate.
