Grindability of Solid Biocarbon (Room 405)

Substitution of pulverized coal by biocarbon in direct injection of auxiliary fuel has the potential to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions of the blast furnace ironmarking process. Besides combustion kinetics, the grindability of biocarbon materials is also an important factor that needs to be considered in industrial-scale implementation. Due to the significant difference between coal and biocarbon, the conventional Hargrove Grindability Index (HGI) for quantification of coal grindability cannot be directly applied to biocarbon materials. A systematic evaluation of biocarbon grindability was performed. The results were compared with typical coals to allow a direct comparison between coal and biocarbon materials.
