Pyrolysis reactions take place in metal alloy tubes within a fired furnace operating in a temperature range of 750-900°C. The degree of carburization can be determined by measuring the volume fraction of Cr-carbides. Usually this is done by means of destructive techniques, such as microscopy. In this work, a non-destructive technique is proposed that determines the distribution of the volume fraction of the carbides. The degree of carburization could be related to the volume fraction of Cr-carbides and also to the magnetic properties of the samples. Thermodynamic and diffusion calculations allow the identification of the chemical character of the carbides.
