Ultralow-P steels (≤0.005% P) can be produced through hot metal (HM) pre-treatment in a ladle or torpedo, a single-slag practice, a double “de-slag” practice and a double converter practice. Although the initial HM P and Si contents may determine the best route for de-P, theoretically, the last option of a double converter practice is not available in most plants. In the present work, strategies for de-P are evaluated and initial plant trial results show that it may be possible to produce ultralow-P steels in a BOF. The overall economy of the method adopted would, however, depend upon the product mix that the shop aims to produce.
