Reliable temperature control is critical in the operation of any electric arc furnace (EAF). Typically, temperature measurements are made with disposable thermocouples immersed using an automatic manipulator system. Recently, Heraeus Electro-Nite has paired with a North American steel producer to commission a new, on-demand, optical temperature measurement system. The system allows semicontinuous temperature measurements with endpoint temperature prediction to reduce the potential for excessive heating of the steel. This new method for measuring temperature has shown potential benefits to EAF operation, such as increased safety through reduced operator exposure, reduction in EAF POT and an increased frequency of on-target tap temperatures.
