Process Improvements at a Continuous Caster Using CasTemp SuperHeat (Room 407)

Accurate superheat control is critical to successful and efficient management of a continuous casting machine. Heraeus recently installed the CasTemp SuperHeat system at a North American steel producer. The system pairs a throughwall tundish thermocouple, CasTemp, with a disposable liquidus sensor, Cas-Tip. Installing the system has allowed the steelmaker to begin work on improving their process in the following ways: increasing casting speeds, reducing ladle temperatures, improving soft reduction, and the potential to automate casting speed changes. Beyond these benefits, the system offers data that assists in the reduction of temperature-related casting problems, including breakouts, freeze-offs and some surface defects.
