Slag analysis can lead to efficiency gains with proper implementation. Analyzing slag can improve alloy cleanliness, extend refractory lining life, and lead to energy savings. Handheld X-ray fluorescence (HHXRF) can be used as an important part of this system. With short testing times and limited sample preparation requirements, the instrument can calculate relevant basicity ratios on the floor, without the need for lab analysis. This paper covers ferrous-alloy production case studies in slag analysis using HHXRF instruments. Additional discussion is included on how post-process HHXRF analysis can be completed to direct material into appropriate slag re-use and disposal streams.
