High Temperature Heat Pumps – New Perspectives for the Electrification of District Heating Systems (Room Lehar 4)

Heat supply to district heating systems are predominantly based on fossil fuels. To meet CO2 emission reduction targets, new alternative means of heat supply are needed. The increasing share of renewable energy sources fulfill the electricity demand but do not serve the supply of heat. In this context, novel high temperature heat pumps offer interesting perspectives: Using these heat pumps, heat supply can be based on electricity from renewable energy sources on the one hand and low temperature heat sources such as waste or ambient heat on the other hand. The presentation will give an overview on potential heat sources and discuss specific potential heat pump applications in detail.
