Growing energy demand, integration of renewable energies and well known but long time seemingly unsolvable issues in energy supply grids pose major challenges today in the provision of power quality and reliability. These issues are becoming more and more common in South East Asia. Frequency and voltage fluctuations, reactive power undersupply or simply insufficient grid capacity are the effects resulting from these issues appearing often in combination. Utilities and grid operators could solve these issues with Energy Storage Systems. This paper will evaluate the potential of Energy Storage Systems in Indochina countries, market trends and future outlook. It will analyse the appropriate design, operation, configuration and commercial aspects utilising advanced Energy Management Systems (EMS) in hybridised energy supply and storage facilities. Finally, a business case in a South East Asia country will be chosen to give an insight into real life operations of an Energy Storage System and its Energy Management Systems (EMS) enabling a stabile grid through frequency and voltage control.
