One way we have been able to engage our special education students in writing and storytelling is to integrate robotics and technology tools with the instruction. Our students are much more excited about sharing learning if it involves Dash, Ozobot, Bee Bot, Cubetto, MangoBot, Legos, The Foos, and other tech tools. Where students struggled to write creatively or about content material under normal circumstances, when we added in coding, robots, and tech, students were eager and excited to demonstrate writing and content knowledge. From map skills in social studies to space skills in science and creative writing about heroes with Legos, students have shown their eagerness to work hard and share their creations.
