2019 WASTECON

Lights, Camera, Action: Decrease Contamination (Room Exhibit Hall Booth 714)

While we know there’s too much contamination in our communities’ recycling carts, many cities and counties have struggled with implementing effective strategies. We’ll share recent, innovative examples of how cities and regions are implementing approaches that can be used by other communities.

  • City of Phoenix: One of the nation’s largest cities, Phoenix serves a diverse population. Phoenix will communicate recent efforts to increase recycling and decrease contamination via mailers, billboards, container tags, interventions and enforcement.
  • Town of Queen Creek: As one of the fastest growing communities in Arizona, Queen Creek has experienced substantial growth in its population and recycling tonnage, while achieving a very low contamination rate. Using a range of educational strategies, we’ll communicate how the Town achieved a contamination rate of less than 10 percent.
  • NCTCOG: As a 16-county region of more than six million people that includes the cities of Fort Worth and Dallas, NCTCOG recently implemented a $500,000 regional recycling and educational campaign. The presentation will communicate how the region developed a harmonized collaborative awareness campaign, based on an in-depth analysis of communities’ waste and recycling data and efforts.
