The development of eight dogs was assessed to determine the effect of rearing in a family setting versus rearing in an intensive training setting. Group A dogs were placed with university student fosters in an established service dog training program. Group B dogs were given to volunteer fosters to be raised as pets. The authors hypothesize that raising service dogs in a family setting for the first year is less stressful, resulting in fewer behavioral problems during later training.
